CONTEMPORARY
EI-SHODOU (shodõ)
In
1990, while living in Tokyo (Japan), Ranna invented ei-shodou
("ei" = English; shodou = Japanese calligraphy)
alphabet calligraphy. She has periodically continued to explore
this innovation in several series of artwork.

Ranna's
Contemporary Ei-Shodõ art fresco tablets
In
this series, Ranna created contemporary ei-shodou art fresco
tablets of English language translations of each of the 20
verses of the Zen text, the Genjoukoan. Created in Ranna's
proprietary Shimmer Art™ method, these ei-shodou art
fresco tablets bear ei-shodou transcriptions of the Zen verses.
Inscribed on fresco tablets created in a "found" method devised
by Ranna to access raw iron oxides, the result is a successful
synthesis of contemporary art with Western fresco techniques
and Asian shodou art techniques . (Winchester
Arts Management, Washington D.C.)
