RANNA® HOT SPOTS
In early 1973, knowing that art was what she would be doing with her life, Ranna boarded a train for the 18 hour journey from Cairns to Brisbane (Australia), with twenty dollars in her pocket and the determination to take up the scholarship she had earned to undertake art studies. Against her father's disapproval and in a city she had never visited, she began her studies at the nascent Queensland College of Art, then housed in buildings at the former QIT at the end of George Street. From these beginnings, Ranna has achieved several "firsts" and exhibited on three continents, Australia, Europe, and the U.S.A. Now in 2003, Hot Spots, all new work, is Ranna's way of marking this significant milestone, avoiding the standard retrospective for such occasions and, instead, starting the next thirty years with something new and looking forward to works yet to come. HOT SPOTS Bush fires Regardless of what humans do to each other - and Earth - down on the ground, viewed from 1 kilometre above, our world is strangely serene and unimaginably beautiful. (Copyright, Ranna, 2003.) CODE: The works
(#3 - #15) are inspired by NASA'S MODIS
satellite images (with
permissions) according to the following colour code: All three regions are desert lands that share intense heat, fires, nuclear contamination, war, and inexpressible beauty. SHIMMER: The Hots Spots works push the artist's signature shimmer technique even further, blurring the difference between painterly effects, texture, and surface radiance resulting from light's response to fine refractive material on the surface of the work. The "Hot Spots" works are inspired by satellite images courtesy of the MODIS Rapid Response Team, NASA-Goddard Space Flight Center. Thanks also go to Margaret O'sullivan for encouraging me to float "out there" for these images, and to Thomas Brister for emailing me the "missing link" : a hyperlink to the first MODIS image I ever saw of Mesopotamia. This exhibition is dedicated to my husband, Shayne Lachlan. ****** UPDATE: New location for Gallery 482 Hot Spots is presented at Gallery 482 by Ranna® Arts Incorporated (LLC).
